Sea The Stars retired after glittering career

By Tony O'Hehir12.56PM 13 OCT 2009 SIX-TIME Group 1 winner Sea The Stars has been retired, a statement from the John Oxx stable to Racingpost.com revealed on Tuesday.

The news ends speculation that Sea The Stars, owned by Christopher Tsui, would run in the Breeders' Cup Classic, for which he was 8-13 favourite with a run with Stan James, and comes just over a week after the colt's magnificent triumph in the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.

Oxx said: "It has been decided after discussions with Mr Christopher Tsui that Sea The Starswill not take part in the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita on November 7.

"He's had a long season and has been in regular fast work from March 3, with his final workout on October 2. He's been in intensive training for seven months with only a three-week break after the Eclipse Stakes at the beginning of July.

"We feel it is unfair to keep him going any further, given his unprecedented record of achievement in the last six months.

"He's come out of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in his usual good form. He is fit and healthy and has been cantering since the race."

Sea The Stars, who had been the subject of rumours he would be purchased by Sheikh Mohammed, will be a much sought-after sire and Oxx added: "He is now retiring from racing, but I have no information on stud career details and an announcement will be made at a much later date when plans have been finalised."

Sea The Stars,a son of Cape Cross out of 1993 Arc winner Urban Sea, began his career over 7f at the Curragh in July last year.

The maiden had been won by Teofilo and New Approach in the previous two years and although Sea The Stars finished only fourth, he hinted at what might come when running on in eye-catching fashion under Mick Kinane, who partnered the colt on all of his nine starts.

A win at Leopardstown followed, on soft to heavy ground - a surface Oxx was never convinced suited the horse - before Sea The Stars won the Group 2 Juddmonte Beresford Stakes back at the Curragh.

He made his seasonal debut as a three-year-old in the Stanjames.com 2,000 Guineas and was sent off an 8-1 chance.

He saw off Delegator by a length and a half to start a season that would yield six memorable wins at the highest level.

The Investec Derby was next for Sea The Stars, with much of the build-up concerning whether such a speedy Guineas winner, by Cape Cross, would have the stamina to perform over 1m4f.

At Epsom, Sea The Stars proved those doubters wrong to become the first horse since Nashwan in 1989 to win the Guineas-Derby double.

The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby was bypassed because of soft ground and the Coral-Eclipse provided Sea The Stars with his next step towards greatness.

Leaving the likes of Rip Van Winkle and Conduit in his wake, Sea The Stars produced his best RPR to date (135) in theSandown Group 1.

Only three runners - all trained by Aidan O'Brien - opposed Oxx's champion in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York on his next start.

Mastercraftsman, beaten into fifth in the Guineas, had since landed Group 1s over 1m and was the latest Ballydoyle challenger to rival Sea The Stars.

His efforts proved in vain as Sea The Stars smashed York's track record to win his fourth Group 1 on the spin.

The Tattersalls Millions Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown - a race Oxx maintained as the main target for Sea The Stars - was next and, once again, Ballydoyle had some shots to fire.

Mastercraftsman again lined up along with Fame And Glory who had been given a break since being beaten in the Derby.

Ballydoyle's race tactics again seemed to play into the hands of Sea The Stars, whose commanding two-and-a-half length victory left onlookers in little doubt to how special Sea The Stars was.

The final test of the colt came in the Arc. Before the race connections voiced their concerns over the ground, trip and draw, but, despite racing a little free early on, Sea The Stars delivered a performance to define his brilliance.
